04 c and c production

 Codes and Conventions of Love Songs: There are two components of codes and conventions; that being technical and symbolic;

Technical: The way camera angles are used ,Different types of shots and movements Diegetic vs non-diegetic sound Pace and style of editing The genre.

Symbolic: Facial expressions Gestures Poses Mise-en-scene

But why are there codes and conventions? The audience can become familiar with a particular structure, as they get used to recognising the different conventions within a genre Provides a structure the audience can understand.

Typical conventions of love music videos:

The Style - this refers to either performative or narrative. Most love songs are typically hybrids, as they both include a story (typically lamenting about past love or idealising a potential lover) and also performance, as they dance or lip sync to the song (typically seductively to the camera. However, there are just as many individual performance or narrative love songs; as it is a choice of the artist there is no mandate

Cinematography - Shots typically follow the codes and conventions of music videos in general, however, shots that are in higher frequency are typically close ups, mid shots and extreme close ups highlighting sensual areas of the body, e.g. lips.. However, shots are also very intentional in the final cut, all functioning together to form a cohesive representation(s) that the audience decide for themselves. Therefore, shots are also not necessarily fixed to genres; instead, they are

down to what the artist wants to produce and its effect.

The Editing Techniques - Often maintains realism in order to build more of a connection with the audience, therefore reduced if no CGI in the final cut. Cuts and sound in time with the music, often what happens on screen is at the time of the beat. What is different with editing is that it is intentional and helps to distinguish the genre that the music video represents.

The Sound (non-diegetic and diegetic) - Diegetic sound is lacking, as the song is obviously laid over the top, however, there are times where there is an introduction to the beginning of a music video (typically narrative) where it is entirely diegetic; playing out more like a film: until the music kicks in. In addition, through editing non -diegetic sounds may be included over the top to exaggerate actions, such as a kiss. As it is music video, music obviously plays a huge role in production; however, this would be a focus of the music itself rather than the music video

Mise-en-scene - Mise -en -scene is also very important in music videos but, different symbols and settings could mean different things to different people resulting in their often being many different interpretations of music videos.
