01 statement of intent

My brief is to create a three minute music video for a love song for an artist signed to universal music. Universal represent artist of all ages, so I began with some audience research to see what would appeal to my 16-25 year old audience. This target audience is so diverse, so I took a small group to help me choose and they lead me to the band ‘bright eyesl’ I liked the band, and the name, so I decided to keep them. I also discussed interests with the target audience and they said that they would prefer a video that challenged codes and conventions, either with style or cast. They preferred bands where the music spoke for itself and videos that had a style that was not so high on production values, because that felt false. Also, my band is meant to be a teenage alternative band, just starting out because they met at university. This narrative surrounding the identity of the group really lends itself to a more homemade style of video which will appeal to younger audiences as they feel they could emulate it. I want the identity of my group to feel very accessible.  

  

Website: 

I am going to make a website for my band fitting the standard of universal music, my research has demonstrated that the majority of universal music's websites are brief and generally include a main page with a picture of the artists and their latest or most popular release and then a secondary page with links to merchandise or touring. I don't believe merchandise or touring will fit my website, as my band is supposedly relatively new, therefore my websites second page will feature a forum to allow fans to interact with other fans and the band themselves. My website should be easier to navigate as it is for younger people, on the front page I will feature my music video and behind the scenes videos.  My understanding of websites for artists is to engage viewers enough to encourage them to further listen to the artist, therefore my website will include pictures of the band which may be relatable to my target audience.  

  

How do you intend to link your media products to demonstrate your knowledge and understanding of the digitally convergent nature of your media production? 

Music videos and artist’s websites both serve the same function, they establish the identity of the artist with their target audience and promote connection and value transfer. One of the most important ideas that I am trying to convey across both productions is the idea of accessibility. The music video promotes accessibility through style and will also feature on the front of the website. Making of footage will make the process explicity for the audience and even make them feel included. The forum page will also seem a lot like a social media page and will further promote the idea of accessibility.
